The historic Teach The Shift conference seeks to convince that on an individual level, it is possible to have a positive and significant impact on one's carbon footprint and on climate change; that it is possible to act, that it is important to act, and that one can act right now.

The conference focuses primarily on climate change, with very little attention paid to energy resource depletion. Similarly, the greenhouse effect, carbon budgets, and carbon footprints are described, certainly rigorously, but above all concisely. The conference dedicates most of its time to presenting solutions, which are deliberately geared towards the public's everyday lives and practices. The conference prioritizes motivation over raising awareness, aiming to minimize any sense of shock or paralysis among the audience.

The chosen teaching method consists of an intervention divided into two parts, each playing a role both to motivate and encourage action, and to facilitate the adoption of solutions:

  • A presentation/conference lasting approximately 1 to 1.25 hours: the core of this presentation consists of showcasing a dozen solutions that significantly reduce individual carbon footprints and are accessible on an individual level. The supporting slides are designed to be impactful and visually engaging; they contain very little text and almost never display graphs. They rely heavily on animations.
  • An interactive question and answer session, designed to encourage engagement from people in the audience.
